Overview
When integrating third-party hardware with ROAMiQ, such as Victron, Shelly, Reolink, and other supported devices, the recommended process is to complete the device’s native setup using the manufacturer’s software first, if available, and then add the device to ROAMiQ.
Following this order ensures that the device is properly configured, reachable on the network, and fully initialized before ROAMiQ attempts to communicate with it.
While some devices may function without completing the manufacturer setup first, standardizing this process, wherever possible, results in the most reliable experience.
Recommended Setup Process
1. Configure the device using the manufacturer’s tools
- Use the device’s official app, web interface, or configuration utility.
- Connect the device to the network.
- Complete any required setup steps such as:
- Firmware updates
- Network configuration
- Device naming
- Initial calibration or pairing
Examples:
- Victron: Configure through VictronConnect or the GX device interface.
- Shelly: Configure through the Shelly app or web interface.
- Reolink: Configure through the Reolink app or web interface.
2. Verify the device is functioning normally
- Confirm the device operates correctly using the manufacturer’s software.
- Ensure it is visible on your network and responding normally.
3. Add the device to ROAMiQ
- Once the device is fully configured and online, then go through the process of setting it up on ROAMiQ.
- ROAMiQ will discover or connect to the device and integrate it into your ROAMiQ dashboard.
Why This Process Is Recommended
Ensures Proper Initialization
Many devices require initial configuration before exposing their data or control interfaces. Completing the manufacturer setup ensures those services are active.
Enables Required Settings
Certain features or permissions may only be enabled through the manufacturer’s software. Without these settings enabled, ROAMiQ may not detect or fully integrate the device.
Improves Integration Reliability
A device that has already been configured and verified reduces network discovery issues and integration failures.
Provides a Backup Control Method
Keeping the manufacturer’s app configured gives you a secondary method of accessing the device if you ever need it—for troubleshooting, firmware updates, or advanced configuration.
When This May Not Be Strictly Required
Some devices can be discovered and integrated by ROAMiQ without completing the manufacturer setup first. However, this behavior is not universal and may vary depending on the device model or firmware version.
To maintain a consistent and reliable setup process, ROAMiQ recommends completing the manufacturer configuration first whenever possible.
Summary
Best Practice Integration Order
- Configure the device using the manufacturer’s app or interface
- Verify the device is working on the network
- Add the device to ROAMiQ
Following this process ensures the smoothest integration experience and provides the most reliable long-term operation of your ROAMiQ system.
